This is what happens when we are stressed
What is stress?
Webster: “a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation”
Eye-Opening Facts About Stress (ASA):
- 75%-90% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems
- 72 % of adults report feeling stressed about money at least some of the time
- 51% of Woman Vs. 32% of Men say they have laid awake at night in the past month due to stress
- 36% of Millennials say stress has increased in the past year
Why are we stressed?
The world today is dramatically different from when it first came into existence. Due to this fallen world, people are suffering from health issues that were virtually absent at the beginning of time. 75-98% of mental and physical illnesses come from our lifestyles- especially our thought life, where stress is a major factor. About 80 percent of all diseases have a spiritual root with various psychological and biological manifestations. Only 2-25 percent of mental and physical illnesses come from our genes and the environment.
In order to live in the society today, people are tempted to thrive on performance, competition, and perfection. As a result of this, people are not only becoming more stressed, but are developing anxiety that stems from this. Anxiety is detrimental to health as it can lead to all kinds of physical health issues:
- digestion problems
- electrolyte imbalances
- lowered immunity
- hormonal dysfunction
- abnormal body metabolism
- other neurological system dysfunction (i.e. depression).
What can we do about stress?
Despite the fact that people are aware of their stress and/or being physically sick all the time, they believe it is out of their control and nothing can be done about it. In other words, they think it is just a way of life, associated with the aging process, and that medicine will heal them when they become physically sick again. More importantly, people are not normally treated for stress until it manifests itself in a different disease that is more damaging to the body. There is a lack of education on what stress can do to the body, how it can be managed, and why people get physically sick all the time. Studies have shown that people live healthier lives when they align their thinking, lifestyle, and eating habits to God’s original intention.
